Blizzard Entertainment announced on both their Twitter and Facebook pages a double experience weekend for Overwatch, running between June 8th and June 12th (or June 9th and June 13th, depending on your time zone), which has now begun across the globe.

The weekend is running side-by-side with the ongoing one-year anniversary celebrations already taking place in the game, as a further ‘thank you’ to players for a successful first year. Throughout the event, players will be granted twice the amount of experience points for each match played, making levelling up and earning those sweet, sweet loot boxes a whole lot easier.

All players who log in to the game on PS4, Xbox One and PC between these dates will receive double XP. This bonus applies to all of its sources, including (but not limited to): time spent in a match, completing a match, winning a match and earning in-game medals.

Even players who join matches in progress as backfill will be rewarded with double XP for their efforts, meaning that those frustrating ‘defeat’ screens as soon as you join a game will, for a short time, be a little bit more bearable. While the double XP bonus is stacking multiplicatively with existing group and IGR bonuses, one bonus which is definitely not affected is the First Win of the Day bonus, which remains at 1500 XP.

The following start time information was provided by Blizzard Entertainment in their blog post detailing the event:

This bonus experience period begins in all regions across all platforms on Thursday, June 8 at 5:00 p.m. PDT (or Friday, June 9 at 00:00 UTC) and ends on Monday, June 12 at 11:59 p.m. PDT (or Tuesday, June 13 at 06:59 UTC).

Thus, though the event started yesterday on June 8th in the US, due to time zone differences we in the UK had to wait until 1am this morning before the double XP bonus took effect. The in-game rewards and experience gains available have been well worth waiting for, and I can guarantee that I will be putting many more hours into the game whilst this event is running.
