A main series Pokemon game is nothing without its villainous teams. Those villainous teams are nothing without their evil bosses. The evil bosses in Pokemon can range from cold, charismatic, and maniacal like Lysandre, Cyrus and Giovanni to stupid and silly like Guzma, Archie, and Maxie. The Pokemon company recently announced that every evil boss will be returning in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. In this article I’ll be explaining every evil boss in Pokemon history.

Warning: Contains spoilers for every core series Pokemon game besides Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Ultra Moon.

Giovanni

Giovanni, boss of Team Rocket is the first evil boss in the franchise, making his initial appearance in Pokemon Blue, Yellow, and Red. Giovanni and Team Rocket’s goal was to use Pokemon for profit and world domination. You battle Giovanni a few times and have your final battle with him when you discover that he is actually the leader of the Viridian City gym. After defeating Giovanni, he simply disappears.

Giovanni would appear again in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. He holds the same role as boss of Team Rocket and gym leader of the Viridian City gym, but the difference with Giovanni in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen is that he vows to return one day with a stronger Team Rocket before disappearing.

In Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, you can battle Giovanni through a special Celebi event where you time travel to the past. It’s revealed that Giovanni did hear the message from the Goldenrod Radio Tower when Team Rocket took it over in hopes of finding their leader. In Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 Giovanni appears in the Pokemon World Tournament.

Giovanni will return in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as the boss of Team Rainbow Rocket.

  Maxie (GBA version)

Maxie is the boss of Team Magma, a group of eco-terrorists; whose goal is to use the Blue Orb to summon the legendary Pokemon Groudon to expand the world’s land. In Pokemon Ruby, he’s the main villain, and in Pokemon Emerald Maxie serves as one of the main villains. After you defeat Groudon Maxie will return the orb he stole and disappear. When you defeat Maxie in Pokemon Emerald he gives a speech about how he has learned that humans shouldn’t interfere with nature. Maxie in Pokemon Sapphire is allied to you.

An alternate reality version of this Maxie will appear as a member of Team Rainbow Rocket in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

                                Maxie (Omega Ruby Version)

The version of Maxie in Pokemon Omega Ruby has more of a personality. He’s still the boss of Team Magma and wants to awaken Groudon but is far more confident and has great respect for you (the trainer), even entrusting you with the Red Orb and his Cameruptite. He even allows you to visit his hideout anytime you want. He becomes so friendly towards you that you can battle alongside him during the Battle Maison’s Multi Battle Mode.

 Archie (GBA Version)

Archie is the boss of Team Aqua, a group of eco-terrorists; whose goal is to use the Red Orb to summon the legendary Pokemon Kyogre to expand the world’s seas. Team Aqua and their boss Archie are the opposite to Team Magma and their boss Maxie. In Pokemon Sapphire he’s the main villain, and in Pokemon Emerald Archie is one of the main villains. After you defeat Kyorge Archie will return the orb he stole and disappear. In Pokemon Ruby Archie is one of your allies.

An alternate reality version of this Archie will appear as a member of Team Rainbow Rocket in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

     Archie (Alpha Sapphire Version)

This version of Archie is not much different from the Archie in the GBA games. He’s still the boss of Team Aqua. The only big difference is that he’s more pirate-themed in terms of speech and design.

                                                      Cyrus

Cyrus is the boss of Team Galactic. Their goal was to summon  Dialga in Pokemon Diamond, Palkia in Pokemon Pearl, or Giratina, Palkia, and Dialga in Pokemon Platinum. Cyrus decided emotion was the cause of the world’s strife; so he aimed to use Giratina, Palkia, and Dialga’s powers (depending on version) to destroy the universe and recreate it without spirit with him as a god. When you defeat Cyrus in Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl Cyrus vows revenge and disappears. In Pokemon Platinum when you defeat Cyrus he’ll stay in the Distortion World, vowing he’ll still make his world without spirit.

An alternate reality version of this Cyrus will appear as a member of Team Rainbow Rocket.

                                                     Ghetsis

Ghetsis is the boss of Team Plasma in Pokemon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2. In Pokemon Black and White Ghetsis, N, and Team Plasma goal are to “liberate” Pokemon from people at first by trying to convince trainers to let go of their Pokemon. Later on in Pokemon Black and White, it’s revealed that “liberating Pokemon” was all a front by Ghetsis, that he has corrupted Team Plasma to start stealing Pokemon and wants to use N to summon either Reshiram or Zekrom (depending on version) to take over Unova. After you defeat Ghetsis he is taken to jail. It’s revealed by the Shadow Triad that Ghetsis has escaped and is on the run.

Ghetsis returns in Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 as the boss of Team Plasma. His plan in Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 is to freeze the Unova region with the power of Kyurem. After you defeat Ghetsis he has a bit of a mental breakdown.

An alternate reality version of Ghetsis will appear as a member of Team Rainbow Rocket.

                                                    Lysandre

Lysandre is the boss of Team Flare in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y. Lysandre’s goal was to use the ultimate weapon powered by either Xerneas or Yveltal (depending on version) to destroy humanity and Pokemon. Because Lysandre thought the only way to create a “beautiful world” was to commit genocide. After you defeat Lysandre he’ll be crushed by his crumbling base.

An alternate reality version Lysandre will appear as member of Team Rainbow Rocket

                                                       Guzma

Guzma is the boss of Team Skull in Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon. Team Skull and Guzma are considered delinquents, and annoyances rather than actual threats leading to the people of Alola to treat them like jokes. It’s revealed through dialogue in Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon that the reason Guzma and Team Skull are acting out is that they failed their island trials. Team Skull’s and Guzma’s goals are to steal Pokemon from the people of Alola.

                                                      Lusamine

Lusamine is the President of the Aether Foundation, she’s the true evil boss of Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon. The Aether Foundation and Lusamine’s goal were to open Ultra wormholes all across the Alola region, so she can meet the Ultra Beast Nihilego, a Pokemon Lusamine has become obsessed with. When Lusamine meets Nihilego they fuse (kinda) when you defeat her Nihilego will leave and Lusamine will go into a coma.
