In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and need to be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. A number of foods actually do improve your mood when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you combat depression. Just make sure that you do not toss the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can be fantastic for lifting up your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Consume an egg and feel better!

Make a trail mixfrom a variety of seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all good for elevating your mood. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not only that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you wish to battle depression. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. DHA and omega-3s are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really great for helping boost your happiness levels. These grains can help you feel full for longer too, which can help your mood too. Feeling hungry can really make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your sugar levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is found to be chock-full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body.
